Lyrics by Felicia Farerre
Lyric writing is a deep dive into the ethereal ocean of creativity. When I am in that ocean, I am connected to an old, lovely and familiar source that feels to have no floor, or ceiling, and where the colors are ever changing.
I was very lucky to live with my grandmother early in life. She was an advid reader, and writer of stories and poetry. Her love for the written word inspired me. She gave wings to my imagination and helped me discover my writing voice. I have very fond memories of spending hours making up stories with her, and recording them on cassette tape.
I was pretty shy about my writing for a very long time, but in the early 90's I started showing people my work. A good friend of mine, Julia Audrich, was a singer/songwriter. She encouraged me to go further, and recommended some very good books for me to read. One of them is still right here on my desk. At this point, it has become a good friend that I can count on for sound advice and encouragement when I need it most. That book is "Writing Down the Bones" by Natalie Goldberg. I highly recommend it to anyone who has the desire to write.
One of my favorite lyric writing gigs was for a project called "Sonnet." I studied Shakespeare's sonnets to understand the voice and energy within the Bard's sentiments. Diving into that ocean was daunting to say the least. Especially trying to fish for something new to say about something so beautifully expressed, well known and respected. In the end, I took what each sonnet opened up inside of me personally, and wrote my heart down about it within the lines of the music.
It is a rewarding journey to write lyrics in collaboration with various composers. I have written many lyrics inspired by the lovely compositions of my partner, Phil Rey Gibbons. My work with Thomas Bergersen on Star Sky has been very well received, as have the lyrics I've written for the beautiful music of Nick Phoenix. When you are working with such inspiring music, the depth of the creative ocean just gets deeper, wider and more colorful.

I love the power and expression of words. Paradoxically, I also love the silence of wordlessness. "Silence is the element in which great things fashion themselves together; that at length they may emerge" (Thomas Carlyle). It is where I dive, and allow the process of creativity to take me deeper still.
